Description

The Unijunction Transistor (UJT) is a three-terminal semiconductor device with a single PN junction. It is a negative resistance device, which means that its resistance decreases as the current increases. This characteristic makes it useful in oscillators and other switching applications.

The UJT has three terminals:

  • Emitter (E): The terminal where current flows into the device.
  • Base 1 (B1): The terminal that controls the amount of current that flows through the device.
  • Base 2 (B2): The terminal that is connected to the emitter through a high resistance.

UJT Characteristics

The UJT has two important characteristics:

  • Firing voltage (VF): The minimum voltage that must be applied to the emitter for the UJT to turn on.
  • Peak voltage (Vp): The maximum voltage that can be applied to the emitter without damaging the device.

The UJT’s firing voltage is determined by the interbase resistance (RB), which is the resistance between the two bases. The InterBase resistance is typically in the range of 100 to 1000 ohms.

The UJT can be used in a variety of applications, including:

  • Oscillators: The UJT’s negative resistance characteristic makes it useful in oscillators, which are circuits that generate periodic waveforms.
  • Triggers: The UJT can be used as a trigger in circuits that need to be activated by a specific voltage or current.
  • Pulse generators: The UJT can be used to generate short pulses of current or voltage.
  • Voltage limiters: The UJT can be used to limit the voltage that is applied to a circuit.

The UJT Charactetrstics Apparatus is a versatile device that can be used in a variety of applications. Its negative resistance characteristic makes it a useful tool for generating periodic waveforms, triggering circuits, and limiting voltage.
