The Energy Band Gap Apparatus is used to determine the energy band gap (Eg) of a semiconductor by studying how the reverse saturation current of a PN junction diode changes with temperature. Students heat the diode in the built-in oven, record current at rising temperatures, plot log(Is) against 1/T, and calculate the band gap from the slope — the standard degree-level solid-state physics experiment.
