What is a P-N Junction?

A PN junction diode is a semiconductor device formed by joining two types of semiconductor material — p-type and n-type — together. The p-type side carries holes (positive charge carriers), while the n-type side carries free electrons (negative charge carriers). When the two are joined, electrons from the n-type side move across the junction and fill the holes on the p-type side, creating a depletion region at the junction — a narrow zone with no free charge carriers.

Biasing Conditions for the PN Junction Diode

Forward Bias

Positive voltage on the p-type side, negative on the n-type side. The depletion region narrows, and current flows through the diode.

Reverse Bias

Positive voltage on the n-type side, negative on the p-type side. The depletion region widens, and no current flows through the diode.
